Preppers Donating to Protect the Environment

Preppers environment climate changeThe common stereotype that preppers are selfish, lone wolf hoarders who have given up on the world is just plain false.

Some preppers even go as far as to say the reason they prep is to be able to help others. From our blog post covering the top motivations among liberal preppers, a leader from a popular Facebook group told us, “I want to develop and share skills that are useful to the community at large, that increase the likelihood of the community as a whole prospering in adversity.”

Many preppers join programs such as CERT: Community Emergency Response Teams so they can lend a hand when local disasters overwhelm professional first responders.

Preppers donating to environment climate changeTo put our money where our mouth is, The Prepared is proud to be a member of 1% for the Planet, a nonprofit created by the founder of Patagonia.

Businesses that join their program pledge to donate 1% of their sales to vetted charities working on environmental issues. The 1% program staff reviews every member’s financials to verify they are meeting their commitment.

Today we’re happy to send our first donation to charity.

Because we’re a new project, our revenue is still quite small and we lose money every month. But it’s still the right thing to do, and our first $500 donation actually represents ~25% of our 2017 revenue, not 1%.

Every time you buy a product we recommend after clicking the “buy” links around our site, a portion of your purchase goes to these important programs.

And it doesn’t cost you anything extra! The price you pay is always the same, including if you went to Amazon and searched directly.

Why should preppers donate to environmental causes?

We get asked all the time: “What are you most worried about? What are you prepping for?”

One of the Sane Prepper Rules is that since you can’t predict what’s going to happen, good preps aren’t tunnel-visioned on specific threats like solar flares or communist zombies — they are broad and can handle almost anything.

That said, our two biggest concerns are around the environment and the economy. Which, in many ways, aren’t separate things.

We keep politics off of The Prepared. And we know that we turn off a good chunk of the prepper audience by even talking about climate change. (Trust us, you don’t want to see some of the emails/comments we receive.)

But climate change is real. It is not a “normal pattern” or Chinese hoax.

Even the Trump administration released a damning report from 13 federal agencies confirming that climate change is real, it’s caused by humans with “no other explanation”, and it’s going to cause a lot of major problems in the coming years.

It’s not politics — politics is what happens when we try to figure out how to deal with climate change.

If you’d like to dig deeper into the environmental risks we face, see Reasons Why People Are Preppers. For example, wildfires are already much more frequent and severe due to climate change. And it’s only expected to get worse.
