The Importance of Food Storage Containers
If you’ve ever dabbled into the field of survival food, you’ve probably noticed that a lot of the bulk foods come in large buckets or something similar, but you didn’t think twice about it, right?
These large buckets/containers holding your emergency food are not given enough credit.
Food storage containers are almost just as essential to the quality and shelf life of your food as the food is itself.
How so, you may ask?
Don’t worry, we are going to explain everything to you in this write up of food containers.
What makes these commercial food storage containers so special?
* The buckets you see are a food grade plastic that are airtight, moisture proof and unable to be punctured.
* These special buckets are designed specifically for food and they do not have any harmful chemicals or toxins that could be released into your food.
* Food stored in large sacks or boxes will spoil quickly because they are not properly sealed or created for long term food storage.
There are two other precautions that companies take to ensure the longevity of their food.
Although you’ve got your storage container that is sealed and secure, you need something to place the actual food in and mylar bags are the direction that most people learn towards.
They are plastic and foil like material and they don’t allow any light to get into the bags.
Another great thing is that you are able to seal a mylar bag with a heating element such as an iron, so you’re able to create your own food rations and seal them.
These can be used alone to store food or you can seal the food up and then place it in the food storage buckets to have it all together and protected.
A major issue when storing food for long periods of time are the exposure that it gets to oxygen which will in turn make the food go bad more quickly.
A way to help with this is to use oxygen absorbers in the buckets and even in the mylar bags.
They react with the air once they are opened and they will remove any excess oxygen that is in the bucket and/or bag, ensuring that your food is safe and secure.
So between the food grade plastic buckets to hold all of your supply, the sealed up foods in the mylar bags and the oxygen absorbers thrown in to catch all the excess oxygen, you can see why most people lean towards storing their food in this fashion.
It protects your food and ensures that you have a long shelf life of survival food.
Want to create your own food storage container??
Don’t use any other containers or buckets that are NOT food grade plastic.
For example (home depot buckets, trash cans, trash bags, mop buckets, detergent buckets)
Even if you think it’s okay because they are clean…never use something that is not food grade.
There are chemicals and toxins that will seep into your food and make you sick.
Where to find food grade plastic buckets?
1. You can purchase the buckets online.
2. Check your local bakeries/restaurants/grocery stores:
Some of these will have tons of buckets that are leftover from bulk items like flour, grains, etc. and they may be able to help you out with that.
So you have your storage container, now what?
If you’re prepping your own food, invest in some mylar bags!
These are SO simple to use.
You can literally cut these to size and seal them up with an iron.
Just place your dehydrated food or whatever you’re trying to store in there and seal them up! Good to go.
Last thing that we’ve talked about before is the oxygen absorbers, which we highly recommend.
You can place these in the mylar bags with the foods AND in the buckets to such up the oxygen and make sure your food doesn’t spoil.
If you’re looking at metal cans, there is a huge difference in the type you buy out of a grocery store and the type that places use for long term food storage.
They generally use the #10 cans that are for bulk storage.
This option isn’t very viable to the DIY food storage person.
A specific sealer is needed to seal these properly that most commercial companies have.
You can also purchase these canned foods, ready to go from companies such as Survival Cave Food and they don’t need to go into a food storage bucket.
Food Storage Containers:
Whether you purchase these all put together and ready to go, or you create your own survival food stash…you can see the essentials of what is needed to create long term food storage is pretty much the same.
As you can see, there is a lot more to food storage than just putting stuff in a bucket and hiding it in your closet.
If you’re going to store food, do it the right way so you can make sure it is safe and will last you a very long time.
If you use your knowledge about food storage containers, you’ll have a happy and healthy stockpile of survival food!
