Greg Carbin, a meteorologist at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said Monday most of the tornadoes were in Kansas, followed by Oklahoma, Iowa and Nebraska. The tornadoes hit during a 24-hour period from 7 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday after forecasters warned of a “high risk” of severe weather.

At least six deaths were blamed on a storm that went through the northwest Oklahoma town of Woodward and destroyed more than 100 homes and businesses. Woodward County emergency management director Matt Lehenbauer said that the sixth person passed away after he was brought to an Amarillo, Texas hospital the morning after the tornadoes hit. CBS This Morning (CTM) added that 28 people were injured.

Thirteen business and 89 homes were destroyed, according to CTM.

Great Plains Hit With 75 Tornadoes

Tornadoes raking communities across the Midwest and Plains left five people dead and at least 29 injured in Oklahoma, damaging a hospital, homes and other buildings as the severe weather front plunged eastward Sunday across the nation’s midsection.

Oklahoma emergency officials said five people died after a tornado touched down at 12:18 a.m. Sunday in and around the northwest Oklahoma town of Woodward, the high winds damaging homes, toppling trees and downing power lines about 140 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. The brunt of the damage was reported on the west side of the town of about 12,000 and its outskirts, where search teams scoured the rubble for hours for any still trapped or injured.

Storms also were reported in Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska as a severe storm system lumbered its way across the nation’s midsection Saturday and Sunday. Lightning, large hail and heavy downpours accompanied the system that still posed a severe weather threat from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan in the north to eastern Texas and Louisiana hundreds of miles to the south.

Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Keli Cain said the state medical examiner’s office confirmed five fatalities in the Woodward area early Sunday. She said she didn’t know the gender or age of the victims or details of their deaths but several homes were damaged. More than 8,000 customers were without power in the region.

Dave Wallace, chief executive officer of Woodward Regional Hospital, said 29 people, five of them in critical condition, were brought to the hospital for treatment of injuries ranging fractures and serious injuries to cuts and bruises. Three patients have been transferred to other hospitals and four were admitted, he added.

“We transferred them to a hospital with a higher level of care,” Wallace said. “We’re not a trauma center.”

A deputy director in Cain’s office, Michelann Ooten, told AP that emergency crews remained very much in search and rescue mode at first light, hours after they began operations in darkness.

“They’re still going door to door and in some cases there are piles of rubble and they are having to sift through the rubble,” she told AP. “They are trying to identify if anyone is still in there, trying to account for everyone.”

The Department of Homeland Security recently stoked concern by contracting a company to provide them with 450 million rounds of hollow point bullets. Now the federal agency is also purchasing bullet-proof checkpoint booths that include ‘stop and go’ lights.

A press release from Shelters Direct brags about how they are providing the DHS with bullet resistant guard booths. Images of the booth from the company’s website suggest the guard shacks will be used to control checkpoints.

“This guard building features a standing seam hip roof, a thru-wall HVAC unit, (2) UL 752 BR Level 3 sliding doors, UL 752 Bullet Resistant Level 3 glass and a Low]E coating. Other noticeable highlights of this prefabricated steel building include metal halide security lighting, decorative window grille frames, and a “Stop & Go” light with controls,” states the press release.

The purpose behind the bullet proof booths is unknown, but the DHS has publicly announced that it plans to increase the number of unannounced checkpoints manned by TSA VIPR teams and other federal agents beyond the 9300 that were set up last year alone.

The DHS’ Federal Protective Service stoked controversy in January when it set up a checkpoint and posted agents armed with semiautomatic guns outside a Social Security office in Florida.

The armed agents checked identifications of locals as part of Operation Shield, an unannounced drill centered around “detecting the presence of unauthorized persons and potentially disruptive or dangerous activities.”

Last week, defense contractor ATK announced that it had been awarded an “Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement for .40 caliber hollow point ammunition” by the DHS.

The contract stipulated that ATK would provide Homeland Security with 450 million rounds of bullets over a five year period. The federal agency also purchased 200 million rounds of bullets back in 2009 and has an open bid for up to 175 million rounds of .233 caliber ammo.

As the American Dream blog pointed out, “The Department of Homeland Security is only supposed to be shooting at people very rarely. It simply does not make sense that they would need so much ammunition.”

With guns and ammo flying off the shelves at record levels due to fears that a second term in office for Obama could lead to a fresh assault on second amendment rights, the DHS may be attempting to head off any potential ammo shortage.

The feds are also seeking to arm hundreds of newly hired security guards tasked with protecting government buildings.

Some fear that the DHS is preparing for the threat of civil disorder or a crisis in Mexico that will lead to a mass migration of people across the southern border.

In December, DHS chief Janet Napolitano directed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to prepare for a mass influx of immigrants into the United States, calling for the plan to deal with the “shelter” and “processing” of large numbers of people.

DHS Purchases Bullet Resistant Booths After Huge Ammo Buy

Even expert storm chases would have struggled to decipher the difference between the tornado warnings sent last May before severe weather hit Joplin and, a few days later, headed again toward downtown Kansas City.

The first tornado was a massive EF-5 twister that killed 161 people as it wiped out a huge chunk of the southwest Missouri community. The second storm caused only minor damage when two weak tornadoes struck in the Kansas City suburbs.

In both cases, the warnings were harbingers of touchdowns. But three out of every four times the National Weather Service issues a formal tornado warning, there isn’t one. The result is a “cry wolf” phenomenon that’s dulled the effectiveness of tornado warnings, and one the weather service hopes to solve with what amounts to a scare tactic.

In a test that starts Monday, five weather service offices in Kansas and Missouri will use words such as “mass devastation,” “unsurvivable” and “catastrophic” in a new kind of warning that’s based on the severity of a storm’s expected impact. The goal is to more effectively communicate the dangers of an approaching storm so people understand the risks they’re about to face.

“We’d like to think that as soon as we say there is a tornado warning, everyone would run to the basement,” said Ken Harding, a weather service official in Kansas City. “That’s not how it is. They will channel flip, look out the window or call neighbors. A lot of times people don’t react until they see it.”

The system being tested will create two ties of warnings for thunderstorms and three tiers for tornadoes, each based on severity. A research team in North Carolina will analyze the results of the experiment, which runs through late fall, and help the weather service decide whether to expand the new warnings to other parts of the country.

Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr phoned Lieberman to lay out Australia’s opposition to an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, and to say that sanctions need more time.

More and more Western countries are joining a growing list of countries who are applying heavy international pressure on Israel to prevent it from attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities. The latest voice is that of the new Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr.

Several days ago, Carr phoned his Israeli college Avigdor Lieberman. This was the first telephone call between the two. Aside from the niceties of the first formal phone call, Carr took advantage of the conversation in order to warn Lieberman that an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities will have serious consequences.

We should never accept that there are those that wish harm to us, our families, and the very structure of our country.  These individuals use violence and/or force to destroy Americans and their property in direct violation of the United States criminal laws.  Terrorist use these actions to cause intimidation, coercion or sometimes ransom.   Many times use these threats to cause fear among the public, trying to convince people that their government has no way to prevent terrorism – and what’s worse is they get immediate publicity for their causes.  In my opinion, if we stopped giving them the “limelight” they would not get the thrill and self-importance and at least curtail their activity.

Terrorist usually strike high-risk targets.  These targets include military and government facilities, international airports, largely population cities and high-profile landmarks.  To make life more difficult for the average citizens, terrorist may also target large public events, water and food supplies, utilities, and corporate centers.  The biggest ammunition terrorist have is there ability to spread fear.

If you find yourself in a terrorist situation or threat, you will need to rely on police, fire and other officials for instructions.    I don’t know about you, but I am a little leery of how our police and other officials to be on my side.  Let’s face it, they are following orders that may or not be in the public’s best interest.  The best thing you can do is prepare for terrorist attacks in basically the same way you would prepare for any other crisis events.

Even though I question the true attentions of FEMA, they do have some of the most researched and thorough information on how you can prepare for an emergency situation.  Below are the six steps FEMA recommends that you take to prepare for terrorism.

1. Wherever you are, be aware of your surroundings.  The very nature of terrorism suggests there may be little or no warning.
2. Take precautions when traveling.  Be aware of precautions when traveling.  Be aware of conspicuous or behavior.  Do not accept packages from strangers.  Do not leave luggage unattended.  Unusual behavior, suspicious packages and strange devices should be promptly reported to the police or security personnel.

3. Do not be afraid to move or leave if you feel uncomfortable or if something does not seem right.
4. Learn where emergency exits are located in the buildings you frequent.  Notice where exits are when you enter unfamiliar buildings.  Plan how to get out of a building, subway or congested public area or traffic.  Note where staircases are located.  Notice heavy or breakable objects that could move, fall or break in an explosion.
5. Assemble a disaster supply kit at home and learn first aid.  Separate the supplies you would take if you had to evacuate quickly, and put them in a backpack or container, ready to go.
6. Be familiar with different types of fire extinguishers and how to locate them.  Know the location and availability of hard hats in buildings in which you spend a lot of time.

 It appears that terrorist are not going away anytime soon, so the best thing we can do is be prepared – for anything!
